Hair: It is very important to understand hair growth cycle & its importance in Hair Transplant.

Hair primarily is made up of keratin fiber which is a protein. Hair is continuously growing all throughout the life. A normal person has approximately one million hairs over body. Out of these, he/she has approximately 1 to 1.5 lacs hairs over scalp. Hair growth in different parts is different. Scalp hairs, on an average, grow at the rate of 0.30 mm per day i.e. approximately 1 centimeter per month. Beard hairs grow faster than the scalp hair. Hairs over beard, pubic & axilla are usually thicker/coarser than scalp hairs. Hairs of other parts are usually thinner than scalp hairs. All hairs pass through three phases of cycle. Each hair cycle has:

1]. Anagen phase or growth phase: that is active growth phase in which hair keeps on growing. It last for 02 years to 10 years. So how long hairs can grow depends duration of anagen phase & the rate of growth. The person having long anagen phase i.e. 10 years & faster growth rate can have hairs as long as > 5 feets!! Normally 90 to 95 % of scalp hairs are in anagen phase.

2].Catagen phase or transition phase: In this phase hair prepare itself for fall. It usually last for about 3 weeks.Normally <1 % of hairs are in catagen phase.

3]. Telogen phase or resting phase: In this phase hair will take rest before starting its next cycle with anagen phase. The resting phase usually last for about 3 months.Normally 5 to 10 % of hairs are in telogen  phase.

Then the hair cycle is repeated once again. Fall of 50 to 100 scalp hairs per day is considered as normal.

Each hair is accompanied by an oil secreting gland [sebaceous gland] , a muscle known as arrector pili and nerve ending at the base of root/dermal papilla for tactile sensation. In 1980 Headington noticed that hairs do not grow singly on scalp. They grow in unit of 1 to 4 hairs & term them as “Follicular Unit”. This is a breakthrough in hair transplant whether it is FUE or FUT method of hair transplant.

So “Follicular Unit”is comprising of 1 to 4 hairs + sebaceous gland/s & arrector pili muscle/s.

After hair transplant the transplanted hair first will go into catagen  & telogen phases & will fall within 2 to 4 weeks’ time. After 10 to 16 weeks of hair transplant, hair will start growing again.
